Projects / Diplomatic / Government

Client Overseas Memorials & Projects, Department of Veterans’ Affairs

Location Labuan Island, Malaysia

This project involved refurbishing the Surrender Point Memorial on Labuan Island, Malaysia, where Lieutenant-General Masao Baba surrendered to Major General George F Wootten on 9 September 1945, marking the end of WWII in the Pacific. The memorial honours this significant event in Australia’s military history, the service and sacrifice of those involved and the coming of peace to Labuan, the Pacific region, and to the world.

As Principal Consultant, GMB provided design and documentation, planning, and coordination with civil, structural, and landscape design requirements.

Key aspects of the project include delivering facilities for the Australian Government overseas, coordinating local and international design services, and planning for the tropical island environment using simple, robust and readily available materials. The design also addresses the challenges of the remote location.
