The High Commissioner’s Residence was built more than 60 years ago. It belongs to its era but also has distinctly Malaysian architectural features, most notably its prominent roof hoods and gables. After a Redevelopment Evaluation Report was completed in 2019, GMB was engaged as Principal Consultant to renew the residence to contemporary standards. The aim was to improve how the building performs without losing its character.

The existing layout works well and has been kept. Formal and informal lounges, dining and kitchen are on the ground floor, with private accommodation above. Within that layout, all interior spaces have been remodelled, the kitchen and bathrooms re-planned, and fixtures, fittings and lighting replaced. The refurbishment also covers the courtyard and the grounds around the house.

Much of the work is in the building fabric. Windows and external doors have been replaced throughout, external walls insulated and the roof renewed. New heating, cooling and electrification will improve the building’s energy performance. Services are fitted within the existing roof structure, so the upgrade meets current sustainability requirements while the residence keeps its recognisable form.

The residence hosts the High Commission’s cultural and educational programme, including art and cultural events. The concept design and materials draw on Malaysian cultural references, so the house continues to be a place of Malaysian hospitality in the national capital.
